Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry

Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry is one of the clinical branches of dentistry dealing with oral health problems of children < 13 years of age. All the dental treatment procedures required in children e.g. restorations, pulp therapy, crowns, space maintainers, habit breaking appliances, interceptive orthodontics, preventive dentistry and  minor surgery under local anesthesia are performed by specialist doctors (Paediatric Dentist ). Many problems, if solved at early stage can prevent major treatments in permanent dentition e.g. a step wise serial extraction can prevent fixed orthodontic treatment in permanent dentition. An early treatment of white spot lesion can prevent tooth loss and cavitated lesions to develop thus preventing financial, emotional and esthetic loss of the patient.

Promoting healthy dietary habits: Paediatric dentists educate children and parents on the effects of certain foods and drinks on oral health, promoting a healthy diet that benefits both dental and overall well being. Age specific toothpastes should be introduced to the child as they contain specific amount of fluoride content required for the child. Development of healthy oral hygiene and dietary habits at young age encourages them to maintain good hygiene throughout their lives.
